ABOUT:

Founded in 2020, Chickpea is proudly a New Zealand made small business aiming to provide quality, timeless, easy to wear alternatives to mass production and fast fashion.

Chickpea's founder and sole maker, Beth, draws from her skills as a qualified designer and sewist to create garments for infants and toddlers up to age 5yrs. All pieces are made to order using only natural, breathable fibres such as cotton and linen. Fabrics are pre-washed for shrinkage before construction.

The colour palette is inspired by nature and muted vintage tones. Many of the colour options are neutral/unisex, in a purposeful step away from the typical 'girls wear pink, boys wear blue' gender norm.

ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS:

This business is conscious of the environment, and is especially aware of the negative impacts made by the fashion and textile industry. Therefore, Chickpea aims to leave a lasting impression on the mind, but not on the earth. Here are some of the ways Chickpea strives to fulfill this aim:

• Using only natural fibred fabrics and threads. Not only are natural fibres breathable and beautiful to wear, they are also eco-friendly - they have biodegradable properties, unlike synthetic fibres that contribute to pollution once they reach the end of their 'usable' lifespan.

• Fabric off-cuts from garment construction are diverted from landfill, instead added straight to Chickpea's home compost bin to biodegrade.

• All garment swing tags are hand-punched from recycled pattern making paper. This minimises waste.

• Orders are packaged in biodegradable materials including acid-free tissue, brown paper and r3pack home compostable postage bags.

• Chickpea is working toward naturally dyeing it's own fabrics, as a natural dye process is less harmful to the environment than synthetic dyes. Watch this space for further developments...
